The Idea
The first idea I had combines both projects, dance and fields and frames, from this term but might be quite a difficult concept to complete as I would like to make a music video in this form but could also just simply make a dance film.I want to merge several pieces of technology together to create a 360 degree video, this can be done by using an oculus rift, iphone, and a 360 degree camera attachment for the iphone. This idea however is just a base, I will need to think of what I want to film and then experiment with the technology to see what I can do with it.
Oculus Rift
The oculus rift is a new piece of gaming technology, in fact so far the company who make the oculus rift have only released two development kits, DK1 and DK2, so that developers can create content for the rift before it's released to the public.
The rift is a virtual reality head-mounted display that allows the user to look around the game by moving their heads, they can look anywhere they would like they might if the game were actually in real life.
However, the completed rifts may not be released to the public yet but google has made their own cardboard version which anyone can use with their smartphone, and it only costs £15.
GoPano (360 camera)
GoPano micro is an attachable lens for the iphone, it allows the user to create 360 degree videos and photographs, all you need to do is tap record and it starts filming all around. Using an app or using the website http://www.gopano.com/ you can watch the videos back and to view all around all by either moving your phone or clicking on the video and dragging.
This would work well with the oculus as it means the viewer can look around the video instead of looking at the framing which the filmmaker chose. However there is an issue with using this, with the oculus rift you can look up and down as well as panning round, but I would not be able to film above or below as the attachment is not capable of doing that. If I were to attempt to create a video which you could see all around, the camera rig alone would cost me £100 plus the cost of the cameras that need to be attached to it.
