Synopsis
I intend to produce a photographic series of work with audio that allows me to recreate my mothers childhood photographs. Unfortunately, after the suicide of her brother during their youth, my mums original childhood photos were burnt by her mother Doreen. “Discovering Burnt Childhoods” draws on conversations with my mum about her childhood in Jersey, reflecting on the trials and tribulations that came with living on a small island, along with the difficulties of such a sudden death of someone close to her. The basis of the project will be formed around a walk she used to take around the perimeter of the island, this allows me to discover her history and the island itself.
Approach
The outcome for this project can be produced in a variety of ways, all of which involve either digital or printed photography. The first outcome involves creating an installation of projected images, all which come with a sound clip from the conversation with my mum. The other outcome involves printed images in a gallery, allowing the viewer to take in the image for as long as they wish. The photographs themselves will take on a reflective mood, looking at the thought of death through the optimism of spring. They will mainly focus on the landscape of Jersey, however the basis for the photographs will be around the major places in my mother’s childhood such as her schools and the cafe her family owned.
Intended Audience
As written above the project will be placed into a gallery setting, however the intended audience will be anyone interested in the subject about memories or mother and daughter relationships, also people who are interested in a variety of photography. Also the project will be posted onto a website, made by myself, as this will allow me to produce work that can be shown to future employers. Due to the subject of the photographs, and the main focus being on landscapes, I will also be entering the photographs into relevant competitions as well as small competitions on the website viewbug.com.
